Bolderwood is a very popular spot within the New Forest National Park and its main attraction is the deer sanctuary adjacent to the car park. The purpose built, wooden viewing platform is the perfect place to observe the Fallow deer as it overlooks a grassy field, where the deer, who are accustomed to the presence of humans, regularly gather.
Deer are usually quite difficult to spot in the forest, due to their shy nature and their preference to stay as far out of sight as possible during daylight hours. However, at dusk and during the hours of darkness, deer are regularly seen grazing the open grass and heathland.
Information boards are located on the tiered observation platform of the deer sanctuary, providing visitors with knowledge and facts about the five different species of deer found within The New Forest. However, Fallow deer are the only species to be found within the sanctuary and due to its size you are never guaranteed to see them. Although, during the summer months the deer are fed at the viewing platform daily between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
Also available at Bolderwood is a picnic area with benches, toilet facilities, a New Forest information cabin, and graded woodland walks of 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2 miles. In front of the car park is a large grassy field where visitors often play ball games and picnic.
Bolderwood is also home to the beautiful Ornamental Drive and the Knightwood Oak, one of the oldest trees in England (and still growing).
