Poole Harbour is one of the World's largest natural harbours, yet very shallow, with an average depth of only 48cm and one main dredged channel. The harbour is home to several small islands,
Brownsea Island being the largest and ferry services operate to here from Poole Quay. Tickets for the Brownsea Island Ferry can be purchased from a booth on the Quayside. The headquarters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) overlooks Holes Bay in the harbour.
The famous Poole Pottery has a Studio and shop on the bustling Quayside which has many wonderful restaurants, cafes, public houses (some with live music), wine bars and sightseeing cruises.
Every Tuesday night, between April and September hundreds, sometimes a couple of thousand, motorcyclists cruise into Poole Quay to showcase their vehicles. This event is a huge crowd-puller and raises thousands of pounds for local charities. Bikers are charged a small fee to enter the event but for the spectators it's free. Look out for other special events, throughout the year.
Follow the 'Cookie Trail' around the Old Town (behind the Quay) and you will see the historic, 17th Century buildings and learn more about the history of Poole. Or take a leisurely walk along the Quayside watching the passing yachts and boats.
